Spot gold is quoted from Sunday evening to Friday evening with only a short daily pause, so "when is the gold market open" has an easy answer: almost always. The more useful question is when it moves. We took the hourly XAU/USD candles from the same price feed that drives our live chart and measured the high-to-low range of every hour over the last month.
The data
The sample is 500 one-hour candles from 16 September to 16 October 2026, which works out to 21–22 observations for each hour of the day. Times are UTC. The number in each row is the median distance between the high and the low of that hour, in US dollars per ounce. We use the median rather than the average so that a single news spike does not decide the result.
| Hour (UTC) | Median range | |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00 | $16.84 | |
| 01:00 | $20.66 | |
| 02:00 | $16.38 | |

What stands out
1. 12:00–14:00 UTC is the busiest stretch, by a wide margin
The two hours from 12:00 to 14:00 UTC had median ranges of $22.77 and $22.39, roughly three times the quietest hours of the day. This window lines up with the scheduled US economic releases at 8:30 a.m. New York time (12:30 UTC while the US is on daylight saving time) and, an hour later, the opening of the New York stock market. London is still fully active, so both of the largest gold trading centres are in the market at once.
The 14:00 UTC hour stays elevated at $19.36. That is the hour of the LBMA afternoon gold auction (15:00 London time), which is used to set many physical and contract prices.
2. Asia has its own pulse, and it follows Shanghai's schedule
If you only trade the London session you may assume Asian hours are dead. The data says otherwise: 01:00 UTC had a median range of $20.66, the third-highest hour of the day. That is 9:00 a.m. in Beijing, when the Shanghai Gold Exchange opens its day session. The range drops to about $10–12 at 03:00–04:00 UTC, which matches the Shanghai lunch break, and jumps back to $17.13 at 05:00 UTC as the afternoon session resumes.
3. The London morning is calmer than its reputation
Many guides call the London open the most volatile time for gold. In this sample, 07:00–10:00 UTC ranged between $11 and $14.42 per hour: active, but well below the US-data window and below the Shanghai open. The 10:30 London morning auction did not produce a visible jump in the 09:00 UTC row.
4. After 19:00 UTC the market thins out
From 19:00 to 23:00 UTC the median hourly range falls to between $7.77 and $9.64. Spreads at many brokers widen in the same period, especially around the 21:00 UTC rollover. A stop placed with normal daytime distance is more likely to be touched by a spread spike than by real price movement during these hours.
How to use this
- Size stops for the hour you are in. A $5 stop is about a quarter of a typical 12:00 UTC hour but more than half of a typical 20:00 UTC hour. The same distance carries very different odds of being hit.
- Know the release calendar. The big 12:00–14:00 UTC numbers are medians across all days. On US CPI, payrolls and Federal Reserve days the range of that hour is usually far larger, and spreads can widen for a few seconds around the release.
- Mind the clock changes. The UK leaves summer time on 25 October 2026 and the US on 1 November 2026. After that, the 8:30 a.m. New York releases arrive at 13:30 UTC, so the busy window shifts one hour later in UTC terms.
- Treat one month as one month. This table describes a single month of trading. The ordering of busy and quiet hours has been stable in our feed, but the dollar values move with the overall volatility of gold, which we cover in how far XAU/USD moves in a day.
